I had the same fears when my sons’ were little, and it came up sooner than I expected, they were 8 and 9 when my 9 year old said, “Mom did you know that some women kill they’re babies while they’re still inside of them?” and I was so sad and angry that the anti-choice, anti-women, oppressors got their message to my kids first. It felt so wrong that my experience as their mother, as a women who has had an abortion, was already framed by strangers who are steeped in misogyny. I had to be on the defensive. It was a hard conversation to have.
Reading your post supports my decision to be honest with them.

Molly: Very true! I think of the Roe court as the Burger court, and Blackmun wrote the majority opinion. But you’re absolutely right.

Very powerful stuff. I nearly said the same thing about “nine old white men” in a recent post, then I double checked. Thurgood Marshall was part of the court that heard Roe v. Wade, and he was black.

Your words have moved me. As a woman who had two abortions in her lifetime (one due to timing; the other to poor prenatal diagnosis), I, too, want my own children to understand the beauty of choice.
